The new team labored in relative obscurity until 2000 when they initiated an unprecedented rise through the ranks of German soccer. 

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim advanced from the fifth tier to the third in only two seasons, making their first DFB-Pokal appearance in 2003. By 2006 they had moved up to the second tier, earning promotion to the Bundesliga the following year by way of a second-place finish in the regular season standings. In 2017, Hoffenheim placed third among all teams in the Bundesliga to make their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League.
