Born in 1964 in Atlanta to a musical family, Reagon fell in love with music watching her mother perform in the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock. As a teenager, she encountered the work of artists like Kiss, Black Sabbath and Big Mama Thorton, artists who would greatly influence her later sound.
At only seventeen Reagon began performing professionally as an opening act for star Lenny Kravitz. She has since performed alongside a slew of similarly high-profile acts like Elvis Costello, Ani DiFranco and Meshell Ndegeocello. In 1990 Reagon released her debut album Justice through Flying Fish Records.
In 2017 the artist premiered her critically acclaimed rock opera Parable of the Sower at NYU’s Abu Dhabi Arts Center. The opera earned significant praise for its timely themes, compelling message and powerful score. Over the course of her career, Reagon has earned a number of awards and accolades, most notably the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, the Black Lily Award for Outstanding Performance and the New York Foundation for the Arts Award.
