The Road Hammers came together in 2004 as the side project of Jason McCoy, who had previously risen to fame through a number of Canadian Country Music Association Awards. McCoy enlisted the help of Byrne and Bellamy after the trio realized they shared a passion for trucker music, and The Road Hammers were born. They released their self-titled debut album in 2005, the same year they were featured as the stars of a reality show on Country Music Television. 

The Road Hammers’ debut album became a number one hit on the Canadian Country Albums chart and won the group the CCMA Award for Group or Duo of the Year and the Juno Award for Country Recording of the Year. In 2007 the band signed to the Montage Music Group label, through which they released their sophomore album Blood, Sweat and Steel the following year.
