Sun Ra is the stage name for Herman Blount, a composer, pianist, bandleader and poet known for his experimental jazz music. 

Born in Birmingham, Ala., in 1914, Blount immersed himself in the Chicago jazz scene of the ‘40s. There he developed his alter ego “Sun Ra,” through which he served as one of the pioneers of Afrofuturism. His prolific career produced music in styles as diverse as ragtime, free jazz and electronica. From the mid-50s to the early ‘90s he led the Sun Ra Arkestra, an ever-changing collective that enjoyed high-profile members such as June Tyson, Marshall Allen and John Gilmore. 

Despite Blount’s death in 1993, the Sun Ra Arkestra continues to tour today under the leadership of Blount’s trusted friend and sideman Marshall Allen.
