Each episode is roughly two hours long, and for most of its history was hosted by singer-songwriter Larry Groce.
The creation of Francis Fisher, Andy Ridenour and Larry Groce, Mountain Stage aired its first episode in 1983. Though the show calls Charleston home, it has often traveled across the US for special tapings in New York City, Boston and Philadelphia, among others.
Each episode of Mountain Stage begins with its theme “Simple Song,” written and recorded by Groce himself. Groce also serves as the show’s artistic director and generally invites five musical guests from a broad set of genres including jazz, alt-rock and folk music. Over the course of its history, Mountain Stage has offered early national exposure for many artists who went on to achieve worldwide fame including Phish, Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan.
