The band originally came together under the name Necrosis, formed with a vision of playing a more technical and musically sophisticated style of death metal music. They released a number of albums in the late 80s and early 90s before changing their name to Cryptopsy in 1993.

Later that year the band released their first demo under the new name, Ungentle Exhumation. The demo caught the eye of Gore Records, who soon began managing the band. Almost overnight, Cryptopsy developed a cult following in the Canadian death metal scene, in particular for their complex musical stylings and incorporation of influences from outside the genre.

Cryptopsy has since continued to evolve, releasing the jazz-infused Whisper Supremacy in 1998 and the experimental avant-garde album …And Then You’ll Beg in 2001. The band has been widely praised by critics for pushing the boundaries of death metal while retaining its essential elements, and for their extreme musical skill.
