The first game was known as the "College Bowl" that was played on November 15, 1947, when Jacksonville State played Pembroke. The home team put on a clinic and easily won their first game in the new stadium with a final score of 45-0. The stadium was first named after Paul Snow in 1961, who was a major supporter of Jacksonville State. In 2010, it was changed to the Burgess-Snow Field at Jacksonville State Stadium to honor Bill Burgess, the team's coach from 1985 to 1996, who led them to their first NCAA Division II Championship.
