The club was formed in 1920 and only competed as amateurs in the Emilian divisions until 1968 when they were promoted to Serie D. Through a merger with other local football teams, they formed the current team in 1974. The club was promoted for the first time to Serie C2 in the 1983-84 season, which is the lowest level of professional football in the Italian football system.

With that promotion, the team had gone from Serie C2 to Serie A, the top of the Italian football pyramid in just seven years.
