Along with the other varsity sports sponsored by the university, the Great Danes lacrosse team originally competed at the Division III level. They began playing at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the America East Conference in 2000 after a brief transition period where they played at the Division II level for a few seasons.
After the move to NCAA Division I, the UAlbany lacrosse team became a national contender almost immediately. The team won their first America East regular season championship in 2002. The team then followed up that season by winning the America East Conference Lacrosse Tournament in 2003 and a berth in the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship tournament. Additionally, the Great Danes have made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Lacrosse Tournament multiple times and qualified for the Lacrosse Final Four for the first time in 2018.
