The band came together in the late ‘90s, and originally played cover songs of Chicago’s electric blues classics. By 2000 however, they had begun writing their own songs, releasing their debut full-length album Brother to the Snake in 2001. The Steepwater Band developed a devoted following in and around Chicago, in particular through a celebrated appearance at the Chicago Blues Festival. In 2003 they were signed to Funzalo Records. 

The band’s prominence grew considerably in the mid to late 2000s, and by the end of the decade, they had performed alongside several high-profile artists including the Doobie Brothers, Cheap Trick and Bon Jovi. They have since toured internationally, in particular to devoted fans in Europe. Their songs have been used in Invincible, Friday Night Lights and My Name Is Earl.
