The group was formed in 1980 with Pat DiNizio and Jim Babjak both on vocals and guitar, Dennis Diken on drums and percussion and Mike Mesaros on bass and vocals. In 2006 Mesaros left the band for ten years. In his absence, Severo Jomacion played bass.
Diken, Mesaros and Babjak formed the band with DiNizio, who is from Scotch Plains after DiNizio had placed an ad in the Aquarian Weekly looking for a drummer to help on a demo tape. The band’s name was inspired by the cartoon character Yosemite Sam, who said the phrase, “I’m a-gonna blow ya to smithereens!”

The group’s sound is heavily influenced by the music of the 1960s along with East Coast roots-rock, and The Who, The Clash and Elvis Costello. The group gained publicity when the song “Blood and Roses” was included on the soundtrack for the Albert Pyun movie Dangerously Close.
The band had a string of hits in the late eighties through the mid-1990s, including “Only a Memory,” “Too Much Passion” and “A Girl Like You.” The group had a series of hits and toured with acts such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. In 2017, DiNizio passed away and the surviving members performed a tribute concert in 2018.
