The musical is based on the improvisational play C-R-E-P-U-S-C-L-E by Rebecca Friedman and is about a spelling bee in a fictional town called Putnam.

The play was performed by The Farm, a New York based improvisational comedy troupe. Sarah Saltzberg was the nanny for celebrated playwright Wendy Wasserstein, who won a Pulitzer for her play The Heidi Chronicles. Wasserstein came to see Saltzberg in the production and told William Finn, composer and lyricist about the play.

Finn and Rebecca Sheinkin worked with Freidman to convert C-R-E-P-U-S-C-L-E into a full-length musical. The musical opened Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theater on January 11, 2005, and closed on March 20. The show won several awards, amongst them the Lucille Lortel Award and the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.

 That show won Tony Awards for Dan Fogler as Best Featured Actor and Rebecca Sheinkin for Best Book. The book is the script that ties the musical pieces together with dialogue and drama. The musical has since been performed internationally.
