They are known for playing in the hardcore punk subgenre, and for their lyrics that often promote anarchism. The members are Phil Bryant, Bruce Treasure, Dick Lucas and the mononymous Trotsky. 

The members of Subhumans had previously enjoyed success in the bands The Mental, The Stupid Humans and Audio Torture. They founded Subhumans in Warminster in 1980 with a vision of playing a more aggressive style of punk rock. Subhumans released a demo tape later that year, which promptly earned them a deal with Spiderleg Records. They released their debut EP Demolition War through the label in 1981. 

In 1983, Subhumans released their debut full-length album The Day The Country Died, which was a runaway success in underground punk rock circles. To this day, the album remains regarded as a classic of the nascent hardcore punk subgenre. Though the band broke up in 1985, they reunited in 1998 and continue to tour and record today.
