The members of Subhumans had previously enjoyed success in the bands The Mental, The Stupid Humans and Audio Torture. They founded Subhumans in Warminster in 1980 with a vision of playing a more aggressive style of punk rock. Subhumans released a demo tape later that year, which promptly earned them a deal with Spiderleg Records. They released their debut EP Demolition War through the label in 1981.
In 1983, Subhumans released their debut full-length album The Day The Country Died, which was a runaway success in underground punk rock circles. To this day, the album remains regarded as a classic of the nascent hardcore punk subgenre. Though the band broke up in 1985, they reunited in 1998 and continue to tour and record today.
