St. Matthew’s Passion Concert Tickets

Experience one of the masterpieces of classical music with St. Matthew’s Passion tickets. St. Matthew’s Passion is an 18th-century composition written by Johann Sebastian Bach for both choir and orchestra. Inspired by the Biblical account of Jesus’ betrayal and crucifixion in the Gospel of Matthew, the piece is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Baroque sacred music.

Along with St. John’s Passion, St. Matthew’s Passion is one of only two surviving Passion pieces by Bach. Written by Bach at the beginning of the 18th century, St. Matthew’s Passion was first performed on Good Friday at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1727. The composer had produced music for the church since 1723.

St. Matthew’s Passion would gain a resurgence in popularity following a landmark performance of the piece by Felix Mendelssohn in Berlin in 1829. The performance revived public and academic interest in Bach’s opus, and by the 20th century St. Matthew’s Passion would be regarded as one of the greatest works of classical music of its time.

The composition has since been performed by a slew of famed composers and conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars. Get your St. Matthew’s Passion tickets here for a chance to see this classical music masterpiece performed live.
