Son Lux began in 2008 as Ryan Lott’s solo project. Though he had previously enjoyed a successful career as a composer, Lott wanted to work specifically on something that would defy traditional genre classifications. His debut studio album At War With Walls & Mazes was an instant success and saw Son Lux voted NPR’s Best New Artist. Lott then released We Are Rising in 2011, which received widespread critical acclaim for its boundary-pushing style reminiscent of Radiohead. Son Lux enjoyed a slew of hit singles in the early 2010s, most notably “Lost It To Trying.”
By 2015 Lott had recruited guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang, and Son Lux was in its final form. The trio began collaborating with bigger-name artists like Lorde and G-Eazy and widely toured at alternative music festivals. The group has enjoyed other commercial successes as well, with Lott composing the score for the film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.
