The QMJHL granted permission to franchise a team in Lewiston, Maine as they replaced the town's previous ice hockey team: The Lewiston Maineiacs which ended in 2010. This is the Phoenix’s third attempt at a hockey franchise, the first being in the Sherwood Castors that dissolved in 2003.

The Phoenix moved onto the QMJHL to make their inaugural draft selection, selecting Daniel Audette in the first round, who has hockey in his blood with his father being Donald Adulette who played for the Buffalo Sabres. He skated alongside Jeremie Beaudry in their first game against Victorville in September of 2012, where they made history as Beaudry scored the first-ever goal alongside Audette's crucial assist.
