He learned to play the violin at four years old, and before he was ten had mastered all levels of the Suzuki Music Education program in Australia. Chen was a featured soloist with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra at eight years old and performed at the Winter Olympics in Japan the following year.
In his early teens, Chen won first place at both the Australian Youth Concerto Competition and Kendall Violin Competition. He has been described by music critics as one of the youngest and most accomplished violinists in Australia. Chen briefly moved to Philadelphia to study violin at the Curtis Institute of Music.
His continued success at classical music festivals and violin competitions around the world eventually caught the eye of legendary conductor Maxim Vengerov. Vengerov made Chen a professional, and Chen began touring widely with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Azerbaijan State Symphony.
Chen has since performed worldwide with the National Orchestra of Belgium and the Luxembourg Philharmonic.
