The Knoxville Raceway is one of the premier dirt track facilities in the world and is known as the Sprint Car Capital of the World. The Knoxville Nationals is a four-day event featuring 100+ sprint car drivers from all over the world competing for a chance at glory and their share of the $1,000,000 purse. Knoxville Raceway has a seating capacity of 21,135 with sold-out crowds on the championship night of the Knoxville Nationals commonplace.
Promoter Marion Robinson created the Knoxville Nationals as a super modified race in 1961 and it was originally known as the Super Modified National Championship. Super modifieds eventually transitioned into sprint cars by the mid-1970s and the event grew from a single-day event on Saturday to now encompass four nights of racing with preliminary races on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to the Saturday night championship. Roy Robbins won the inaugural Knoxville Nationals in 1961, while Kenny Weld became the first multi-time champion of the event by winning back-to-back Nationals titles in 1964 and 1965. Kenny Weld went on to repeat the feat of back-to-back Knoxville Nationals victories in 1972 and 1973.
“The King” Steve Kinser is widely known as the most dominant driver in the history of the Knoxville Nationals. Throughout his career, Kinser won 12 Knoxville Nationals championships spanning from 1980 to 2002. Karl Kinser, a cousin to Steve, has won 14 Knoxville Nationals as a car owner with Dick Gaines, Steve Kinser and Mark Kinser all reaching victory lane while driving for Karl. Other drivers that have won five or more Knoxville Nationals include Doug Wolfgang and Donny Schatz. Several women have also competed in the Knoxville Nationals, with Erin Crocker becoming the first woman to qualify for the Saturday night A-Main event with an appearance in 2003 and another appearance in 2010.
