After growing up with a musical family in Kent, England, he started actively pursuing funk and blues music in his teens. His love for it grew when his uncle returned with suitcases full of R&B records from New Orleans after a two-year stay. By 1981, he made his trip to The Crescent City and began working in the historic Maple Leaf Bar. He started as a painter, then graduated to being a pianist for the venue to join the ranks of so many blues pianists before him. He became known in the area for his skill and was hired by notable musicians like Snooks Eaglin and Johnny Adams. He even received praise from the late and great Allen Toussaint. He recorded his very first album in 1989, Alligator Lips & Dirty Rice, but release wasn’t made publicly available until the early 90s. He only pushed his renown further from there. He recruited his own live band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, and continues to bring his own interpretation to gospel, soul, funk and Afro-Cuban beats among other genres. His work and immersion in the culture of New Orleans finally paid off in 2016 when he won a Grammy Award for his album, Go Go Juice, for Best Regional Roots Music Album. The prowess of himself and his band is not only known in the U.S., but also in Europe. He's played on stages in festivals like Blues Festival Schöppingen, in Germany, the same year he secured his Grammy win. He also stopped in Latvia for the Rīgas Ritmi Festival later in 2019. Not to mention scores of festivals and live venue performances in the U.S. Despite the success of the music he plays on his own, he also composes for other notable musicians such as Bonnie Raitt and John Scofield.
