It was established by local music aficionados on January 14, 1977, as the 501 Club. The current name of the venue comes from the song “Tipitina” by famed New Orleans blues performer Professor Longhair, who frequently played there until his death in 1980.

Tipitina’s is among the most beloved and famous bars in New Orleans. The building that houses the bar was constructed in 1912. Before becoming Tipitina’s, it had been a gambling house, a gymnasium and a brothel. When the venue opened, there had been a bar, a restaurant and a juice bar. The juice bar has long since been discontinued but a banana as a memorial to the juice bar is contained in the logo of Tipitina’s.
