Experience this master conductor with Herbert Blomstedt tickets. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1927 to Swedish parents. The family moved back to Sweden when Herbert was two. He later studied at the Stockholm Royal College of Music and the University of Uppsala then Darmstadt, Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Juilliard and Berkshire Music Center. Blomstedt’s noteworthy performances tend to be from German and Austrian composers, such as Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss and Scandinavians like Greig and Nielsen.
Blomstedt won the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize in 1953 and the Salzburg Conducting Competition in 1955. From 1975 to 1985, he was chief conductor of the Dresdner Staatskapelle and produced many award-winning recordings. He served as the music director of the San Francisco Symphony from 1985 to 1995. They made regular tours of Asia and Europe. Under his direction, the symphony won two Grammys, a Gramophone Award, a Grand Prix du Disque and other awards from Japan, Germany and Belgium. After leaving San Francisco, Blomstedt conducted in North German Radio Symphony till 1998 and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra till 2005.
