Johnson has brought in numerous musicians throughout the years to fill in the band's lineup. The band released their debut album Echolation in 2001 and then signed with the popular indie label Sub Pop in 2002 and released four albums. The band's albums on Sub Pop included Mouthfuls, Spelled in Bones, The Ruminant Band, and Tripper. 

Their Mouthfuls track "When U Love Somebody" was prominently featured in the movie Youth In Revolt.  Fruit Bats disbanded in 2013 with Eric D. Johnson releasing solo work under his own name.
