The opera was based on the play Don Carlos, Infante von Spanien by Friedrich Schiller. The play is performed often in Italian, under the name Don Carlo.
The play itself is based on the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias from 1545 to 1568. As part of the peace treaty ending the Italian War of 1551 to 1559 between the houses of Hapsburg and Valois, he was betrothed to Elizabeth of Valois. The peace treaty dictated that she be married to his father Philip II of Spain.
The opera was first performed on March 11, 1867. It was first performed in Italian in June of 1867. It was first performed in Italian in Italy in Bologna in October of 1867. Verdi revised it again before it was performed in Naples in November and December of that year.
Experience live opera with Don Carlo tickets. There are several versions of the opera, more than any other Verdi work. The Milan version, which features French text based on the original and then translated, was first seen in Milan in January of 1884.
The Moderna version restores the “Fontainebleau” first act to the Milan four-act version. Other cuts and versions also exist. In its full length, along with the accompanying ballet, the full opera comes close to four hours in length.
