He got his professional start playing the banjo for Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1963. While he was hired mainly for his banjo playing, McCoury went on to sing and play rhythm guitar. His first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry came as a member of the Blue Grass Boys.
Del McCoury put his music career on hold while he worked a number of jobs to provide for his family. He returned in the 1980s with his sons, Ronnie and Rob, who play the mandolin and banjo respectively. Various other members came and went as The Del McCoury Band toured throughout the United States. Their success led to Del McCoury’s ascension as a member of the Grand Ole Opry in October 2003. In June 2010, he earned a lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Look for Del McCoury tickets at the annual bluegrass festival, DelFest. He started the festival in Cumberland, Maryland back in 2008. The comedian Steve Martin has performed with the Steep Canyon Rangers at the festival. Other prominent groups such as The Avett Brothers have shared the stage with Del McCoury at DelFest. Since the beginning, the Del McCoury Band has played every night at DelFest each year.
