Leupp was born in 1965 in New York City and later studied theatre at Adelphi University. Taking inspiration from performers like Robin Williams, Charles Busch and Lily Tomlin, Leupp created the character of Coco Peru. In 1992 Leupp delivered her first show as Peru, Miss Coco Peru in My Goddamn Cabaret, for which she received widespread critical acclaim.
Soon Leupp was invited to serve in a number of comedic roles on film and in television in New York Undercover, Wigstock: The Movie and Nick and Jane, among others. As Coco Peru, Leupp has also performed traditional stand-up comedy, making a celebrated appearance on the Wisecrack series in particular. Since 2005 she has hosted the Conversations with Coco talk show, where she interviews prominent members of the LGBTQ community.
