His musical interests developed early and he began studying the violin by age six. At 15, Kalmar began studying at the Vienna Academy of Music where he developed a love for conducting and was taught by Karl Osterreicher. He was the winner of the first prize at the Hans Swarowsky Conducting Competition in Vienna in 1984 and several years later became music director of the Hamburger Symphoniker in Germany.

In 2000, Kalmar began serving as principal conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, a ten-week annual summer classical music concert series. He has also served as music director for the Oregon Symphony where he has been a part of a handful of professional recordings. He led the ensemble in recording works like Music for a Time of War, This England and Spirit of the American Range for the Pentatone label.
