He was born into a large family and had to work hard to receive his undergraduate degree in communication. For graduate school he started in England, then moved to Boston, Emerson College specifically, perusing a degree in music and broadcasting. O’Donovan is most celebrated for his music productions, event curation, and public broadcasting. In 1986 he joined Boston Public Radio, WGBH 89.7 FM, and started the show A Celtic Sojourn, a weekly three-hour program that explores historical and contemporary music from around the Celtic world. In the years since, the show has only grown to include national broadcasts, tours, live events, televised events, and multi-media releases.
O’Donovan’s first staged work was 2003’s A Christmas Celtic Sojourn. This event has since become a staple of the Christmas season in cities all around the Boston area. From this success came the Saint Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn, first staged at the Somerville Theatre in 2004. This performance, which features contemporary Celtic artists and traditional music, has expanded to six concerts around the region.
