Antonio Sanchez is a drummer and composer from Mexico known for his collaborations with jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and for writing the award-winning score to Birdman. Born in Mexico City in 1971, Sanchez learned to play the drums as a five-year-old. By his teens he had started playing professionally, later studying classical piano at Mexico’s National Conservatory. He continued his studies in jazz at the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music, pursuing his career in earnest in the late ‘90s.
One of Sanchez’s early breaks came in 1997 when he joined Danilo Perez’ acoustic trio, with which he recorded the Grammy-nominated album, Motherland. His work with Perez caught the eye of Pat Metheny, who invited Sanchez to join the Pat Metheny Group as its drummer. His tenure with Metheny’s band saw the 2003 release of Speaking of Now, which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
