He began writing music at 11 years old for an R&B group consisting of his neighbors and found influence in his style from artists like Tupac and A Tribe Called Quest.
After falling into a lifestyle of drugs and violence, LeCrae saw a major life shift in 1999 when he was inspired by the Christian rap group The Cross Movement, kicking off the start of his own Christian rap career. In 2004 he released his debut album, Real Talk, which was re-released the following year on Cross Movement Records and reached #29 on the Gospel Albums Chart. The same year, he also began releasing music with the 116, a collective of Southern Christian rappers including himself, Andy Mineo and more. He saw a breakthrough into mainstream success in the early 2010s, with help from his 2014 album, Anomaly. The album featured the singles “Nuthin” and “Fear”, and reached #1 on the US Billboard 200.
