Although the band promotes a good-time image playing lively swing music their success is based on solid, high-quality musicianship which has led to the group being invited to appear with leading American orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on their respective programs. The band formed in 1989 under the leadership of guitarist Scotty Morris.

When questioned about the origins of the band's name Morris claims it came as a result of a meeting with blues legend Albert Collins who scribbled an autograph on Moore's concert poster which said: "To Scotty, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy". The band have nine studio albums to their credit and has achieved commercial success with the singles 'Go Daddy-O' and 'Mr Pinstripe Suit'.
