The NWSL was established on November 21, 2012, and Washington was selected as one of the eight locations to host a team The original owner of Washington Spirit was Bill Lynch, and the first head coach was Mike Jordan. In 2013, the team unveiled a new color scheme and a badge representing the team's motto "Burning with Spirit." In the 2014 season, the Spirit finished fourth and would make their first NWSL Playoff appearance. They also finished fourth in the 2015 season, and Crystal Dunn was awarded the 2015 NWSL Golden Boot Award. In 2018, the Spirit opened their first game at the new Audi Field playing against the Portland Thrones. This match set a record for home attendance with 7,976 fans.
