Takemitsu was born in Tokyo before moving to China for several years as an infant with his family. He did not return to Japan until he was eight. At the age of 14, he was taken out of school and inserted into the military, where he was first exposed to Western Classical Music.

He also composed piano works and other pieces such as his Requiem for String Orchestras in 1957, which was internationally lauded, being praised by such artists as Igor Stravinsky.
