Throughout his spare time, while attending high school, Tony became popular playing in Latin rock bands around town such as City Trash. Latin music was gaining popularity in New York during the 70s era, and that is when Vega became increasingly interested in the Afro-Caribbean style of music known as salsa and was influenced by the great Ismael Rivera.

Vega played for numerous bands during the eighties including La Selecta. He played an influential role in the song "La Nueva Cosecha" which was nominated for a Grammy under the direction of Willie Rosario. Finally, in 1988, Vega decided it was time to branch out on his own and start his solo career.
