He joined the Down City Ramblers and remained with them through 1971 before making his recording debut with 15 Bluegrass Instrumentals with Country Cooking. Throughout the 1970s, Tony Trischka collaborated with several bands, including Country Cooking, Country Granola and Breakfast Special.
Tony Trischka released his first solo album, Bluegrass Light, in 1974. He released his second album, Banjoland, the following year. Following his early success, Tony Trischka tickets became available again as he began to tour in 1978 and collaborated with Monroe Doctrine. In the early and mid-1980s, Tony Trischka released three albums with Skyline, including Late to Work, Stranded in the Moonlight and Skyline Dive. At the same time, Tony Trischka worked on his own material and released the solo album Robot Plane Flies over Arkansas in 1983.
Tony Trischka began performing in feature films in the mid to late 1980s, including Foxfire and the Broadway production of Driving Miss Daisy. In 1989, he recorded a theme song used for Books on the Air, a popular National Public Radio. This led Tony Trischka to earn further recognition. He was invited to appear on several other radio networks, including From Our Front Porch, Mountain Stage and Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion. Tony Trischka continued to produce solo records throughout the 1990s, including World Turning, Glory Shone Around: A Christmas Collection and Bend. He released his most successful record to date, Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular, in 2007.
The record's success helped him win the IBMA award for Banjo Player of the Year 2007, and the album earned a Grammy Nomination and won the Recorded Event of the Year and the Instrumental Album of the Year from IBMA. In addition, Tony Trischka was awarded the United States Artists Friends Fellow in 2012.
