Tony MacAlpine was born on August 29, 1960, in Springfield Massachusetts. MacAlpine began studying piano and violin at the age of five, and guitar at twelve. He studied classical piano and violin for several years at the Springfield Conservatory of Music in Massachusetts, as well as various music courses at the University of Hartford in Connecticut.
He is influenced by composer Frédéric Chopin, to whom he pays homage in his versions of the latter's études, which appear on nearly all of his studio albums. He also made significant contributions to several shred metal classics throughout the era, notably on the debut albums of fellow guitarists Vinnie Moore (Mind's Eye, 1986) and Joey Tafolla (Out of the Sun, 1987).
After the debut of Chromaticity in August 2001, he took a lengthy sabbatical from recording solo albums and collaborated with a variety of other musicians and bands, notably as part of supergroups CAB and Ring of Fire. In 2010, he teamed up with progressive metal group Seven the Hardway to release their self-titled LP. He has also collaborated on Sherinian's seventh studio album Oceana (2011).
