They play in the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference, or MAC for short, West Division. They play against other skillful teams in the Great Lakes Region which includes Ball State University, Central Michigan University and Northern Illinois University among others. They play their home games at the Scott Park Softball Complex where fans wear their midnight blue and gold school colors to every game.

The Toledo Rockets softball team saw its inaugural season in 1981 with coach Ethel Allman. They had a rough start the first three years only winning 10 games out of 71, but sprung into action in 1984 with coach Cheryl Sprangel and finished the season with a 27-19-1 record. The next year they came in first place to win their first regular-season title.

They lost in the first round to Kentucky and were shut out by Illinois to be eliminated from the tournament.
