The Toledo Ballet was founded in 1939 by Marie Bollinger Vogt. Vogt studied at George Balanchine's School of American Ballet, the country's top ballet school, and brought back to the region the greatest dance education and choreography in addition to classical Greek, classical Spanish, and Flamenco dance, as well as contemporary ballet. In 1941, just two years after the formation of the Toledo Ballet, The Nutcracker was presented in the United States for the first time, with live orchestral accompaniment provided by the Friends of Music. Only excerpts of the score were permitted out of Russia at the end of the Great Depression and the start of World War II, but more and more of it would be released over time, and Toledo Ballet expanded the production. Toledo Ballet has upheld the record for the longest consecutive running production of The Nutcracker in the United States since that time, continuing a beloved holiday custom that is now known with Christmas.
