In 2009 he won a talent competition organised by the musical band Söhne Mannheims and this was to prove pivotal in Bendzko's career.
The ensuing exposure led to a recording contract with Sony and the young singer's career began to take off. A national tour as support act for the German rock band Silly began to build an audience for his work and in 2011 he released his debut album 'Wenn Worte Meine Sprache Wären'. The album's title single became his winning entry for the prestigious Bundesvision Song Contest and as a result the album went on to sell over half a million copies reaching number four in the charts.
