The Norfolk, VA native was inspired to become an orchestra conductor after watching an impressive performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” when he was 8 years old. Wilkins went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in music education from the Shenandoah Conservatory in 1978 and a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1982.

Wilkens has educated bright young minds at North Park University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Commonwealth University. He has also worked as assistant director of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and resident director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Florida Orchestra.

Additionally, Wilkens holds Indiana University’s Henry A. Upper Chair of orchestral conducting, established by the late Barbara and David Jacobs. He has served on the music faculties of North Park University in Chicago and offers a commitment to audiences of all ages.
