Ades was born in London in 1971 and fell in love with music at an early age. He was mentored in piano by Paul Berkowitz and went on to study composition at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Ades continued his studies at the University of Cambridge and later became a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music.
As a young man, Ades gave his first piano recital in 1993 in London’s Park Lane Group series. He was then appointed the music director of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group ensemble in 1998, where he served for three years. Ades acted as the artistic director for the Aldeburgh Festival of Music in 1999, a post he held for nearly a decade.
As a pianist Ades was a finalist in the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year competition, going on to serve as a resident artist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2005.
