Home games are played at Cheney Stadium, a Minor League Baseball stadium in Tacoma which seats 6,500. The stadium was built in 1960. The stadium is also home to the Tacoma Rainiers of the Triple-A West, who are affiliated with the MLB Seattle Mariners and OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.
The club was originally the Seattle Sounders FC 2 and played at Starfire Sports in Tukwila, Washington. Ezra Hendrickson was introduced as the team’s first head coach in 2014. The Sounders FC 2 played their inaugural match against the defending USL champions the Sacramento Republic, winning 4-2 with Andy Craven scoring the first goal in club history. The club debuted at Cheney Stadium on March 6, 2018. The club was rebranded as the Defiance on January 30, 2019, after the club collected suggestions from the public. Defiance, which references Point Defiance Park and Tacoma’s civic pride, won the popular vote. Chris Little was the first head coach of the newly named Defiance. The team’s crest features a stylized ship based on the USS Point Defiance in the foreground with the tentacles of a stylized Giant Pacific octopus surrounding it.
