It’s an evening not to be missed by devotees of great orchestral music. Hector Berlioz wrote this brilliant piece of program music likely under the influence of opium, and the storyline depicted by the music certainly lends itself to that reality. Each movement includes program notes written by Berlioz himself to detail the parts of the story for the listener. The audience’s imagination will be engaged as they hear this tale come to life through the sounds of a tremendous orchestra. In five movements, Berlioz tells a story of an artist who purposely drinks poison after a futile attempt at love.
Movement one, “Reveries - Passions” - “Daydreams - Passions,” introduces a melody that continues to carry the audience through the work. Representing the young artist’s love interest and his feelings for her, the first movement contains almost erratic moments to display the roller coaster of emotions experienced by the main character. Movement two, “Un ball” - “A ball,” is a waltz and depicts a festive party where the artist continues to obsess over the vision of his beloved. “Scene aux champs” - “Scene in the country,” shifts the setting to a field with two shepherds (musically depicted by an English horn and an off-stage oboe), and the artist wavers between contentment, hope, and also fear of betrayal by his love. In the famous and haunting fourth movement, “Marche au supplice”- “March to the Scaffold,” our protagonist attempts to poison himself with opium after feeling he has been betrayed by his lover. The dose is not lethal, however, and he instead descends into a nightmare where he has killed his lover and witnesses his own execution. Finally, the audience hears the fifth movement, “Songe d’une nuit du sabbat” - “Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath.” The title itself is illuminating as strange figures gather for the artist’s funeral. The movement is lively, eerie and even grotesque as his love interest arrives as part of the band of ghouls.
Symphonie Fantastique is truly one of the most unique and stirring works in the standard repertoire. Classical music aficionados won’t want to miss the opportunity to see Berlioz’s dynamic work performed live on stage.
