Bean developed Summer of Love on commission by the Musical Theatre West in 2011. Later that year the musical premiered at Musical Theatre West, followed by a subsequent production at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Bean had previously risen to fame as the writer of the Off-Broadway hit The Marvelous Wonderettes, which earned the LA Ovation Award for Best Musical Intimate Theatre. Other notable works by Bean include Life Could Be A Dream, Why Do Fools Fall in Love? and Route 66.
Bea has also enjoyed a successful career as a director, directing the premiere of Lend Me A Tenor: The Musical and a slew of other works at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Skylight Music Theatre and Laguna Playhouse, among others.
