Kimock was born in 1955 in Pennsylvania but moved to San Francisco in the ’70s to experiment with emerging rock styles. He first played as part of the folk group The Goodman Brothers before joining the Heart of Gold Band with Grateful Dead musicians Keith and Donna Godchaux. In the mid-’80s Kimock founded the psychedelic rock band Zero, which had multiple songs written by the Grateful Dead’s Robert Hunter. Kimock would record and tour with the band from 1984 to 2000.
The artist worked with several similar bands in the ’90s, most notably with Phil Lesh and Friends and The Other Ones. In 2006 he joined the supergroup Rhythm Devils along with members of the Grateful Dead and Phish. Kimock occasionally tours with his own band, Steve Kimock & Friends.
