Before he even began school, he had an incredible amount of musical talent. He begged for a piano, and when he was five years old, his parents bought one for five pounds from a local antique shop and he started piano lessons. He went on to study at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. In 1978, he was in the finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition; he won the piano section of the event.

Five years later, he placed first at New York City’s Naumburg International Piano Competition. You can see his incredible talent for yourself with Stephen Hough tickets. He received a master’s degree from Juilliard; he received the inaugural Royal Philharmonic Society Julius Isserlis Scholarship to study internationally. He has studied with legends such as Derrick Wyndham, Heather Slade-Lipkin and Gordon Green.

Hough is an accomplished soloist, composer and transcriber and he often plays his own original music in his recitals; he has written over thirty pieces that have been published. In March of 2007, he had the premier for his cello concerto; later that year, musicians at Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral performed his music. In 2009, “Was mit den Traenen geschieht” (a trio he wrote for piano, contrabassoon and piccolo) had its debut performance at Berlin’s Philharmonie. He has recorded over sixty CDs and has won multiple gramophone awards.
