The show is based on the French show Star Academy, which itself is based on the show Operacion Triunfo. The show starts by hosting auditions in different French-speaking parts of Canada, including Ontario and New Brunswick. Fourteen young men and women are then chosen to be in the competition.
The show is then separated into two formats. The first is the show presenting every day during the week moments of the contestants’ lives as well as their training. The second format is a gala show on the weekends where the contestants sing. After the performances, some members are put on the line for dismissal. A contestant can be saved by the public or a judge’s panel.

On September 22, 2020, Patrice Michaud would be the host, replacing Julie Snyder. Marc Dupre has been announced as host for the 2022 season with Michaud leaving after just one season.
