The team was founded in 1972. The Musketeers first appeared in the playoffs in the 1974-1975 season losing in the Division finals to the Waterloo Black Hawks 1-2. Sioux City made its first finals appearance in the 1977-1978 season after beating the Green Bay Bobcats in the semifinals 4-1 but losing to the Waterloo Black Hawks again, this time in the championship finals.

The team’s first USHL championship was in the 1981-1982 season, when the Musketeers again made it to the championship, winning the Clark Cup, awarded to the winner of the playoffs as well as the Anderson Cup, awarded to the regular-season champions.
The USHL also participated in the Gold Cup, which was the USA Hockey Junior A National Championship which the USHL took part in until it became a Tier I league in 2001. The Musketeers participated in six Gold Cups, winning the Gold Cup Championship in 1986.
