The Silkroad Ensemble is a musical collective that is part of the Silkroad, a not-for-profit organization formed in 1998 by famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma to promote collaboration and multicultural artistic exchange. The ensemble consists of a variety of musicians, storytellers, visual artists, arrangers and composers representing Eurasian cultures.

Many traditional instruments from the countries that lie on the original Silk Road route are used by the group. Some examples are the Chinese lute or pipa that is plucked, the Armenian woodwind instrument, the duduk, the Japanese bamboo flute called a shakuhachi and others from other countries such as Mongolia.

Listen to a night of multicultural innovation with Silkroad Ensemble tickets. The collective holds regular hosts interdisciplinary music festivals as well as arranges musical residencies in Europe, Asia and the United States. The collective also commissions original pieces from a variety of places and genres, including works by the Chinese composer Zhao Jiping and the Uzbekistani composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky.

In addition to performing in such countries as Iran, Azerbaijan, India and Tajikistan, the Silkroad Collective has recorded multiple albums. Their first album, Silk Road Journey: When Strangers Meet, was released in 2001. The follow-up Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon was released internationally in 2005.
