The group formed in 1995 in Southern California after several other bands in the area dissolved. Their name comes from the popular film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They released their debut EP, Introducing Save Ferris, in 1996 under their independent label Starpool Records, and they sold around 20,000 copies just through word of mouth. The band’s songs were frequently played on the KROQ radio station during this time, leading them to receive a Grammy showcase award and to sign with the record company Epic Records.

The band’s full-length debut album, It Means Everything, was released in 1997, including their most successful cover single, “Come on Eileen.” The album sold over 400,000 copies and led the band to be featured in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.

The band split up in 2004 after many of its members decided to start their own project. However, in 2013 they regrouped and began performing for fans again. You can see them live with Save Ferris tickets.
