Maida was born in Weston, Ontario in 1970, and briefly pursued a career in criminology through a degree at the University of Toronto before setting his sights on music. In 1992 he founded the alternative rock band Our Lady Peace with friend and fellow musician Mike Turner and quickly became the group’s primary songwriter. In the years that followed, Maida became known for his high-pitched singing voice and cryptic yet vivid lyrics.
Maida then began releasing music as a solo artist, beginning with the release of his debut EP Love Hope Hero in 2006. He also found success as a producer, contributing to albums by artists such as Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson and David Cook. Maida has written songs for Carrie Underwood, Hawk Nelson and Green River Ordinance.
